Evangelicals for Social Action
ESA is the premier project of the Sider Center on Ministry and Public Policy at Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University.
ESA’s mission is to help every Christian be a faithful disciple of Christ. We combine understanding and doing, studying and acting, theoretical analysis and spiritual formation. ESA began in 1973 with the “Chicago Declaration of Evangelical Social Concern,” written at a Thanksgiving gathering of forty evangelical leaders that the Chicago Sun-Times described as the most significant church-related event of that year. ESA publishes a national magazine, PRISM, and ePistle, a weekly e-newsletter.
We help local churches develop and practice holistic ministry, combining evangelism and social action, and we work to implement biblically-balanced, radically faithful public policy. ESA has promoted international economic sanctions against apartheid, supported a multilateral rather than unilateral U.S. foreign policy, and endorsed many efforts to reduce poverty, promote racial justice and care for creation. We are pro-life and pro-poor, pro-peace, pro-creation care, and pro-family.
